An assortment of torn rags. — In-game description

Rags are a type of equipment in DayZ Standalone. They can be used to stop bleeding and are used as a common crafting material.

General

Characters begin life on the coast with a four rags.

To tear clothing into rags: put an item of clothing in your hands, then drag a knife over top of the clothing item and select the “Tear into Rags” option. Tearing a piece of clothing into rags will destroy it in the process, and creates anywhere from 1 to 6 rags depending upon the item you begin with. Clothing must be unequipped or on the ground and empty in order to tear it into rags.

Dressing a Wound

Rags can be used to stop bleeding. This is indicated by the drop on your HUD having three arrows pointing down and a stream of blood gushing from a player. A low level of blood is shown by a general desaturation of a player’s screen color.

Bandaging Yourself

A player may use rags either on themselves or on another player. Before applying rags, it is recommended to clear the area of threats or allow for enough time to administer rags safely — for obvious reasons. To apply rags to yourself: open the inventory screen, drag the rag to your hands, and select “Use”. Alternatively, you can place the rags in one of your hotbar slots, equip them to your hand using the assigned key, and then select “Use.”

Bandaging takes approximately ten seconds, during which the player is vulnerable to attack and cannot move without “breaking” the animation which means having to start all over again.

Bandaging Others

To bandage another player, one must be within range for the option “Apply Rags” to appear.

Application

Before using a bandage, an injured player must first determine if they are bleeding or not. This is indicated by a “Bleeding” message in the inventory screen and as a stream of blood gushing from a player. A low level of blood is shown by a general desaturation of a player’s screen color.

Bandaging Yourself

A player may use a bandage either on themselves or on another player. Before applying a bandage, it is recommended to clear the area of threats or allow for enough time to administer a bandage safely — for obvious reasons. To apply a bandage to yourself: open the inventory screen, right-click on a bandage, and select “Use” from the menu that appears. Alternatively, you can place the bandage in one of your hotbar slots, equip the item to your hand using the assigned key, and then select “Use.”

Bandaging Others

To bandage another player, one must be within range for the context option “Apply Bandage” to appear when using the context menu. To bandage someone else, the bandage must be placed in the hand slot.
